ADORABLE
There's a catch. It's alive! Indeed, it's a living, breathing being. It is not an accessory or a doll to dress up. You must have heard in the news that the City of San Francisco Animal Care and Control has set up airlifting missions to transport many Chihuahuas as well as aides and even vets from San Fran to NYC. Chis are estimated to make up 40% of abandoned dogs in CA based animal shelters (they even outnumber pit bulls). Airlifts are in progress via Virgin America that is donating space for the pups and some humans as well.
The Cockpit
In the last 12 months animal shelters in LA have taken in close to 5000 Chihuahuas! Who cares who is to blame? Pop culture, Legally Blonde, Paris Hilton... Chis are adorable to look at and people don't realize our needs and the responsibility of caring for another life. We are considered accessories (bitter BOL here). Size plays a huge role in the decision, but as we all well know in here, size is irrelevant--commitment is pertinent.
This photo points out the lack of commitment,
and it's only a sample.
You know how we sometimes fool around around when we say "I want one" when somebody gets a cute family addition? Heck, I even said that about a human pup once--but we're joking. They're not...
Save a life. Adopt a chihuahua rescue dog!

***Frankie here: My sissy is still ici, having a ball, doing je ne sais quoi... But I had orders to upload her post (found a note pinned on my bed).
Frankie
Hi Frankie B. it's ME Frankie F. here. My mom has seen that Dachshund in a bun before. She told me not to be disturbed. Whew.
ReplyDeleteSoooo you are still in charge while Twink is off checking out the I Fell tower thingy. You are doing a grrreat job.
Don't tell Twinkie this... I think Gunther is a bit under the weather. She would just want to rush home and go into Nurese Nancy mode. I'm just sayin'.
Yes it is very sad when the hoomans get a puppy then lose interest when the puppy grows up. And they say us doggies have a short attention span.
ReplyDeleteKudos to those hoomans who are helping these Chihuahuas find new, loving homes!
Waggles,
Bijou
Well, we can only hope that at least that pup in the photo got to have a nibble of the bun for all his trouble! All those poor abandoned pups... So sad. You really don't want to see your breed get "popular" for fear of that sort of thing. I'm happy to represent an "unusual" breed, hope it stays that way. So many unusual needs we have to go along with it, evidenced by now many Frenchies need "rescuing" as is!!

The situation with the chis is so sad. At least some are taking steps to try to help them. It is very wrong for people to get a dog and then just throw them away.
ReplyDeleteWe are so grateful for the home we have. And all of you too.
Woos, Phantom, Thunder, and Ciara
Yes the situation is very sad for Chis. It's sad on many levels for all dogs. But, mom found an article in her People magazine that she thinks will lift your spirits a little! It's about a lady who's Chi won a ton of money in a contest and donated it all to Chi rescue. She's gonna send it today. :)
ReplyDeleteLove,
Stella, Gunther and Betty
It's really sad what's been happening to the chis out there. Most breed specific rescue groups aren't as organized as the greyhound groups are, but we're thinking they're starting to get that way. When tracks close, adoption groups really scramble to be sure all the dogs can be taken in somewhere and the groups are pretty well networked together. We hope that all of those chis find a home soon! Mom says she thinks they're adorable and wishes we could have one, but thinks that it probably wouldn't work with the amount of time she has to be gone for work.
ReplyDeleteGood job, Frankie, with helping Twink get her post posted. But it made me very sad. Why do peoples throw away their doggies? A doggie would never throw away their peoples. I hope, hope, hope all those nice chiwawas get their Most Perfect Homes Ever with peoples who will treat them like they deserve to be treated.
ReplyDeleteWOW, I never knew that about Chic..in Ca. I suppose everyone wants a cute puppy then they don't want to take care of them. How sad :(
ReplyDeleteIt is so sad to see what chis are going through in CA. It is also heartwarming to see that there are some people who are trying to do something about it.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharimg ummmm Twinkie Frankie Dog!
Smileys!

Waaaah it's sad to see the photo with the Chis in their transport baskets. How could people just leave them? It is good to know that there are caring hoomans who are helping them and we crossing our paws that they all find happy furever homes.
ReplyDelete-Fudgie, Princess & the Piappies
We know all about the overpopulation of our poor little chi's... We are lucky to have been able to snatch up Captain & Candy and only wish all the homeless/family-less chis could all find homes.
ReplyDeletexo martine & the kiddlets
PS: captain has made it very clear he refuses to be an "accessory" by refusing to sit appropriately in his dog purse !!! :)
Hi Frankie....Twinkie will be proud of you for the efforts you put in the public service post.
ReplyDeleteWe had no idea Chis were being treated so poorly...but then Mom and I cannot even imagine how/why/how would mistreat any animal. Great to know someone is taking this cause to heart....
Happy Saturday.
madi and mom
Bummer yes but it is very important. It is too bad that celebrities with these 'accessories' could not use their fame to bring attention to this. Just sad.
ReplyDeleteHaving volunteered at a shelter for awhile it is sort of surprising there would be so many 'unwanted' chis since generally the small dogs were adopted first and it was the larger (or even med sized) breeds that were returned when they hit 45lbs. I hope moving them to other cities helps!
p.s. that first picture is adorable though! I am going to imagine that the person who took that was just a chi lover with an excellent sense of humor and not one who saw it as a toy or acessory but I guess the odds are against me!

We are sorry to read about Chris - we just hate humans who don't look after their dogs!
ReplyDeleteWe have met some strange humans in our time.
One lady told us how we used to be in fashion but nobody wants us now cos we stink!!!!!!
Thank dog for rescues we say. That was a very good post today Twinkie.
love
Martha & Bailey xxx
ps the initial reports on Wilfred are not good - he may never be able to turn the page of a book again........
What is wrong with humans that get pups and then just toss them aside like garbage. This is not cool.. It is great that certain groups are making sure they find nice forever homes...
ReplyDeleteBig Sloppy Kisses

Will people ever understand that fashion is not a good enough reason to do anything, least of all procure a tiny dog you don't even really want? Grrrrrrrr........ I'm a peaceful guy but I could bite on this one.

Good work posting for Twink, Frankie! This is so sad that there are SO many abandoned pooches. Did not know about the LA Chis though. Hoomans are so dumb sometimes. This happens with many Terriers too. Folks say how cool, then when they realize we have vibrant personalities they want to trade us in for a couch potato pooch. NO offence to you low energy dogs out there!! Good post. We'll see ya Frankie when we're done with our trip to Gay Paree with Mack & Sally Ann,et all!!
ReplyDeleteSmooches,
BRD & Hootie
Excellent post. What a terrible thing to do to any doggie to abandon it. Chi wawa dogs are REAL DOGGIES and need the same love and attention as any other doggie.
ReplyDeleteMomma saw a magazine at the store yesterday that was some foo foo fashion thing and showed somebody with a chi wawa around their neck like a scarf. ISH!
Of course the first photo in your post is kind of entertaining.
You know, having watched your movies, I think that chi wawas are maybe not even the easiest doggie to own because they seem, er, feisty. So it is double bad when dumb people get one as an accessory.
Slobbers,
Mango
Glad you brought this up. This is why our mom only takes in dogs that need homes. It does not matter their age or medical condition. She wishes more people realized that when you bring home a pet it is a lifetime committment. Take our pal Toby for one example. He had been dumped off at the pound because his family was moving. And he was not. We cannot understand why, because in his case, he is the perfect gentleman, he never messes in the house and likes everybody. We are happy that the Chis are being helped and there is so much more work to be done to get peoples to understand the lifetime responsibility of caring for their fur or feathe kids. And don't even get her started on puppy mills...... Love, your Alaskan poodle buddies!! xoxo
ReplyDeleteWe're glad something is being done to give these dogs a better chance at a home!
ReplyDeleteI am so sad to know about all those Chi's being abandoned!
ReplyDeleteThankfully there are nice people who are going to take good care of them!
Kisses and hugs
Lorenza
Very sad! I have never understood why people do what they do....
ReplyDeleteHope all those wonderful pups get good homes and live happy lives!!
ReplyDeletePaws crossing for them.
Cheers,

wow airplaneys for chiwi's
ReplyDeletewere so happy to know humans have such big hearts open for woggies in need
pibble sugars and wee wiggles
the houston pittie pack
My Mom's sister (that does dog rescues) has seen BUNCHES of chi's and chi/mixes in the 1000+ dogs her group has rescued and taken to no-kill rescues 100's of miles from here where they don't have enough puppies. She is SO into spaying and neutering and we know why with so many abused and neglected dogs and pups thrown out like trash in trash cans...
ReplyDeleteAnyway to find good homes for and educate people about these "fiesty" ans Mango pointed out, dogs is good. We are so appreciative of these wonderful rescuers!
Thanks Frankie for posting this for Twinkie! The Country Corgi Crew
wow, that is unbelievable! needs to be major laws regarding dog breeding...so hard to enforce...and so incredibly sad for the dogs...
ReplyDeletethese are some of the lucky ones...
xoxo
Soooooo sad:( When I was in a shelter in LA in 2003 my chi half was the only chi around. My pawrents wish they could take all of them in like me, but I said no. I do hope they are all lucky like me and end up in loving homes.
ReplyDeleteIt's so horrible to see so many abandoned dogs!
ReplyDeleteOn the plus side (and it's a small plus side), at least they're not being flushed down the toilet because "all drains lead to the ocean."
Sonic
Oh Twinkie..
ReplyDeleteYou are right.. whatever the cause Chis are not an accessory and I hope new owners will consider that prior to adopting. Now you know I love hot dogs... but that hot dog foto- doesn't require ketchup.

When I walk my Labs through the city streets, I frequently get stopped by families who want to meet my labs because they're thinking of getting one. I launch into a description of how many hours a day of exercise a Lab needs to be at all calm. I suggest a different breed... or waiting until the kids are older and don't require 100% of the parents' attention. Every time, I can visualize what's going to happen to whatever poor lab ends up in their house - I'm sure that some of the situations are great but I bet that the majority are suboptimal.
ReplyDeleteYour post is like a sledge hammer reminding me that people don't understand the commitment that a dog needs. How can we ever change that? I try, in my small interactions with people on the street, but it's a drop in the bucket.
So glad that Frankie found the note to post this!
Wooooohooooo!!!! Yea!! TaDa TaDa Announcement... YOU hit a big milestone today!! You now have 100 FOLLOWERS!!!!
ReplyDeleteCONGRATULATIONS!!!!!
PeeS I sent you an email. K?
Twinkie,
ReplyDeleteWe;ve heard about your overpopulation problem there in CA. People can be so rotten. It's great that a bunch of pups are coming to the east coast. It's colder here but we have a lot less pups in our shelters, I don't really know but I've heard the south has a lot of puppies without homes, it's sad.
I hope the marmaduke movie coming out this summer doesn't cause everyone to want a Great Dane.....
woof - Tucker
I have been hearing about the Chihuahua over population in the LA area. I am glad that groups are pulling together and getting these pups to areas where they will find a loving home. I just wish people would learn to spay and neuter their pets and take more of a stand to fix this problem. So many dogs never get a family to love and adore them. It breaks my heart.
ReplyDeleteMuch of our pet overpopulation problem would be solved if people did their homework before adopting a pet. Thanks for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteWe had heard this too and glad they can transport them out.....but so sad that they are in this situation due to Hollywood.
ReplyDeleteThanks for making a great post about this problem. Keep spreading the news and we will too!
Wags and Licks,
Mollie Jo & Bobo
That is beyond belief and so sad. If only they could bring some of them to England where you are more likely to see a dinosaur in a shelter than a chihuahua! We hope all these little guys get good homes.
