Give a Dog a Bone(r)

Can you say, "dog Viagra"?

Nope, this is not one of my usual "creative posts"; this for real. Say "Viagra" and most humans will think of impotence, but doctors have discovered that the drug is good at boosting other parts of the body as well, such as the blood vessels of the heart and lungs.  This fact is not altogether surprising, given that Viagra (sildenafil citrate) was originally designed to lower blood pressure and treat angina.

It was during early testing that Pfitzer, its developer, noticed that the drug aided in male erection, a lucrative side effect. They therefore decided to market Viagra for this purpose, rather than as a heart drug. Viagra was licensed as an impotence treatment in 1998.

Years later, doctors are re-exploring Viagra's benefits in treating circulatory heart and lung-related problems.

Talisker, a three-year-old border collie from England,  developed a dangerously enlarged heart after a lung infection. Talisker would pass out whenever he got excited because his blood wasn't pumping vest enough. His vet, Nat Whitley, prescribed . . . Viagra.

Yet another pup, this one in Long Island, New York, had 14lbs of abdominal fluid and an advanced stage of heart worms. Her vets at Little Shelter in Hungington, Long Island, put Ingrid, on a daily Viagra regiment that has her romping and zooming around healthfully. This rescue pup was given yet another chance in life, since when she was taken in by the shelter in the first place she was malnourished and neglected.

In 2008, a springer spaniel from London, Bentley, made the news when his vet, Ben Harris,  treated him for lungworm that had spread to his heart artery using Viagra. As the seven-year-old canine went into heart failure, his vet turned to Viagra hoping to relax the blood vessels. Bentley will need to remain on Viagra for the rest of his life, but it shouldn't really affect his life in any other way. He was neutered when he was a puppy.

Silly Cat Sunday and A Riddle

For your Sunday entertainment, a little song you can sing along to the tune of Phoebe Buffay's  "Smelly Cat", from the hit television series Friends.

Sing Along with me, Twinkie, the teacup chihuahua.

Hit it!

Silly Cat, Silly cat what are they feeding you?
Silly Cat, silly cat it's not your fault...

They won't take you to the vet.
You're obviously not their favorite pet.

You may not be a bed of roses,
And you're no friend to those with noses.

Silly cat, silly cat what are they feeding you?
Silly cat, silly cat it's not your fault!

And the obvious answer to the riddle: What are they feeding you . . .

(Written backwards for the meandering eyes)

pintac!

¡OlĂ©!

Happy Sunday

Cats and Dogs (and Humans)

I'm here to share a sad sad story...

In our home, cats and dogs, we all get along. M is our mom, our keeper, and our sole food provider, so we should all love her, right? Noot...

Take Gigi Smudge, for example.

See Gigi's pissed off look?
It's permanent.
And even though she was born here, at our house, in M's home office; even though she was solely raised by her mom and M; even though she's spent all nine months of her life with M feeding her. She won't let poor M touch her.

As for the cat and dog situation:

No problem (if you ignore the look of distaste in the spotted dog's face).

Gigi even gets along with Pedrito!

While our poor M gets no TLC from this cat...

So M just sits back, sighs, and watches Gigi Smudge sharpen her claws on her speakers!

Cats and dogs do get along at mi casa, but we're not all sure what to think about humans.

Risky Business II | Negocios Riesgosos II

The word is out. The Geffen Company is about to start filming the remake of their 1983 hit teen comedy, Risky Business, staring Tom Cruise. Tom's sexy underwear dance to "Old Time Rock and Roll" has become Hollywood folklore, especially the part where he dances on the couch.

Mr. Cruise turned down the offer to shoot the sequel, but the studio's willing to proceed without him. They finally locked in their main male lead.

The new male star of Risky Business II is no other than:
Pedrito, the chihuahua puppy

Ms. Rebecca De Mornay, the original movie's female lead, has also refused to star in the sequel without her co-star. Rumors have it that they are considering a certain Ms. Francine Chiweenie to replace Ms. De Mornay.

We'll keep you posted

See Spot Spend

A few fun and some rather interesting facts about the pet industry stats and trents:

Total U.S. Pet Industry Expenditures:
1994 $17 billion
2010 $47.7 billion

Breakdown of the $47.7 billion:
Breakdown:
Food                                                      $18.28 billion
Supplies/OTC Medicine                           $11.01 billion
Vet Care                                                 $12.79 billion
Live animal purchases                             $2.21 billion
Pet Services: grooming & boarding           $3.45 billion

According to the National Pet Owner Survey, 62% of U.S. households own a pet, 40% is the percentage that owns a DOG

Most important fact: dog owners buy 9.3 tennis balls a year (but current trends show that they are cutting back on supplies, with the exception of dog food, thank dog!)

Other wonderful facts that cannot be disputed are the world-wide efforts to reduce pets' carbon "paw" print, thus helping our planet. Many manufacturers are providing eco-friendly cat litter and other pet products. Others use recycled and recyclable products and containers...

Pets are welcome in more places across the country, including hotels, and dog friendly restaurants are becoming popular.

More and more well known companies, such as Paul Mitchell, Old Navy, and Harley Davidson, are now offering lines of pet products.

Of course we, pets in general, have something to offer back:
We help lower blood pressure, reduce stress, prevent heart disease, and help lower health care costs in general. We even help to fight depression!

We rule, furiends!
