What is Rimadyl

Rimadyl is the name Pfizer uses for Carprofen. It's like saying Advil instead of Ibuprofen, for humans. If you have a dog that you're told needs to be on Rimadyl, especially for a log time, skip the brand name and opt for a generic, cheaper brand. It's the same thing. Carprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug mainly used to treat dog arthritis symptoms and flare ups along with hip dysplasia in a senior dog as a long term solution. Short term use is mainly prescribed post-op to relieve temporary inflammation.

In the United States, Rimadyl (Carprofen) is available in 25, 75, and 100mg tablets, liver flavored or non. It's easier for the dog owner to use Pfizer's Rimadyl only because of the taste. Most patients will eat it as if it's a dog treat because of the taste. You need to ask your dog vet about dosage which varies according to the dog's weight.

The most effective way to administer Carprofen, in the long term, is in two doses, a morning one and an evening one.

Dangers Associated With Rimadyl

For long-term use, Rimadyl has been associated with liver and kidney problems, and even gastritis and ulcers, that's why if your dog is going to be prescribed this drug, he/she needs frequent evaluations and blood work done at your vet's office. Other side effects, include loss of appetite, vomiting, and wobbling. If your dog is just getting started on Rimadyl (Carprofen) you must keep a watchful eye and contact your vet if you notice: vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, increase in water consumption, seizures, increase in urination, drowsiness, skin changes, and behavior  changes (energy level, aggression)

If you own a small dog, and you are a responsible owner, you may want to opt for buying larger pills that you cut down to the proper size. No vet will recommend that, so you have to be careful. As for glucosamine for dogs, fish oil for dogs, and chondroitin, you should know that they are not alternatives. These are supplements. They do help boosts your dog's system, but they are not drugs therefore they only compliment the use of Carprofen, they don't replace it. You can always opt to purchase a senior dog food that has those supplements in its formula.
If you are going to be using the drug long-term, there are other names, including the generic Carprofen, you should look up. They do the same job and cost a lot less. Other names include: Novox, Vetprofen, and Care-O-Pet that are available in caplets or chewable. The savings are significant. Another way to save money is not to buy it from your vet. There are companies (such as 1800petmeds.com) that offer great deals over the Internet. Do your research.

When shopping around, I recommend you look up Carprofen, a term few dog owners know.

Cats and Dogs Video

Who would have thought we could socialize seven cats and four dogs so soon? None of us believed it until it came true. The latest cat rescue project is working out beautifully at last. The semi-feral momma cat and her three kittens have gotten the run of the house and the outdoor cat enclosure. Sure, there are some brawls, tons of hissing, but overall we all get along not like cats and dogs, but like a big family. Each one of us is a rescue and we're all grateful to have a forever home. Rescue dogs and cats under one roof provide endless hours of entertainment, so I made yet another video to share. This video's guest star is no other but the infamous chiweenie, Frankie!

Some of you have been asking about the kittens' claws. None of our cats or kittens have been declawed nor will they ever be. Not only is declawing cats inhumane, their claws are their only means of protection if they accidentally venture outdoors. Cats need their claws to climb trees to escape predators and to use them as weapons. However, our kittens' claws do get trimmer regularly, and especially before the introduction of a new pack or tribe member for added safety. Most significantly, the cats and the kittens do not use their nails when play-fighting. Believe me, Twinkie Maria Conchita Rosalinda Alejandra Villanueva de la Ybarra y de Van Twinkerson, there's not a single scratch on that puppy! Frankly, I'm more concerned about the rest of us.

Chihuahua Puppy In Action

Yesterday, you got to see the chihuahua puppy in photos. You saw the abuse the cats sustain, now it's time to see Pedro in action as he "plays" with his two pack members, me, the teacup chihuahua,  and my bridle chiweenie sissy.

Cats and Dogs in Pictures

Pedro, the chihuahua puppy, has made himself so much at home, that we, the dogs, can't stand him. He's a chewer, a biter, and he gets us in trouble. Whenever we bite back he screams his little head off and M gets mad at us. I am secretly teaching him some manners, as his elder chihuahua, but it will take me some time. He's oh-so-cute and he gets away with murder. When M gets tired of him, she asks poor Charlie, the tuxedo kitten (now 4.5 months old) to puppy-sit. I have lots of pictures of them together. Remember, there are many cats and dogs living in our home, 7 cats and 4 dogs. I hope you enjoy, 'cause I sure don't. I've been told that everyone enjoys cute chihuahua pictures and that chihuahua puppies are adorable, but there's nothing cute about what Pedro does to his poor kitten. Some are a bit blurry, but I'm afraid I will not apologize for that. I'll just blame it on the puppy.

Happy Howl-O-Weiners To Y'all

I love Halloween! I get to go to parties where I meed other furiends wearing funny dog costumes, and I get tons of dog treats just for being there and posing for funny dog pictures. Speaking of funny dog pictures, it's time to share Pedro's. I have to give credit to everyone who assisted in this task. Chihuahua puppies are not easy to work with. Ready?

 Roxie, the boston terrier arrived, dressed to kill.

She made fun of lil' Pedro, the chihuahua puppy, for not wanting to wear a costume.

She sweet talked him until he said he'd try.

But he didn't really try, did he?

He fought and made snarly faces, but in the end . . .

Unfortunately, Pedro wasn't the only puppy to suffer the humiliation of the cat costume (yes, it was a cat costume, shh)

As for me, Twinkie, the tiny diva, I already had a sweet deal in place. 

The Petco contest was the only time I'd be wearing a dog costume, and there was not a chance in the world I'd wear a cat costume. M didn't even try. I've trained her well.
