The Bone Marrow Feast

It's a dog-day cinderella story. One day I was broken and sick in an alley in downtown Los Angeles, and the next I'm chewing on yummy marrow bones with my pals, after a long dog hiking adventure.

Lately my pack and I have been hiking with a pair of rhodesian ridgebacks. They've introduced us to many fabulous trails and creeks where we've had endless fun. At first, I, a teacup chihuahua, was left behind because of my size because we were worried that the robust rhodies might step on me. Recently, we decided to give it a shot. It went really well and we've all been hiking together ever since. But it's not just our hikes I look forward to. The rhodies are superb hosts and they are both great at sharing. Visiting them at home is the equivalent of a child going to Disneyland for the first time. My favorite attractions at the rhodies' is that the grounds are like a bone cemetery. At any given time, they have at least four juicy loaded marrow bones lying around with my name on them, or so I like to think.

Our gracious host, Hank, welcoming us at the door
"Welcome to my home, Twinkie and pack."

Our spotted senior dog, always gets the first taste of dog treat

Spotted dog is tolerant of brindle dog, phew!

But if you look closely, you'll see that she's not too happy about it
As long as she puts up with it, we're okay

Spotted dog was right to be concerned about her marrow bone
The little brindle dog does have the tendency to . . .

. . . devour it

I am always happy to assist with the devouring part

I have developed a technique that only small dogs can use. Take notes: The large dogs, cannot, I repeat, cannot get their big snouts in there. The best dog tongues in the world couldn't empty this fine bone. This is where my technique and size come into play. I use my front paws like spoons. I stick them in there, scoop out a nice appetizer size bite, and then I eat it off my toe nails. The large dogs have no option but to drool and stare at me in wonderment.

Over and out!

Dear Twinkie | A Dog Advice Column

A dog advice column

mayziegal asked...
Twinkie - as always, you give the bestest advice!

My question is: Do you thinks it's morally wrong to destuff stuffies? If so, is there a treatment facility that I can checks myself into?

Thank you, thank you for helping to spread the word abouts my contest that starts tomorrow! I'm so excited! I hopes we raise lotsa green papers!

Wiggles & Wags,
Mayzie
TVT: Immoral? Destuffing is a necessity. Do you not need oxygen to be able to breathe? Does the earth not turn? Have you stopped enjoying dog treats? Of course not. Well, guess what, the destuffication of stuffies is vital to all of us. Get rid of your inhibitions and hang ups and enjoy the most natural thing in the world. And congratulations on your 201 (and still increasing) guesses! And for those who don't know what I'm talking about, do stop by Mayzie's blog, you will not regret it.
Mayzie demonstrating a tickling and a destuffing technique!
Twinkie... all this talk of (SHUDDER) SQUIRRELS...
I will have trouble sleeping now. As you will see in a few days... I am SURE that Squirrels are out to GET ME!!! They are everywhere I look. BAH and DOUBLE BAH!!!!
SOOOO NOW HERE IS MY QUESTION FOR THE WEEK...
I have to go away for a few days. I left pre-posts, butt I can't let my comments just appear, beclaws I have gotten three more Alien Comments this week!!!
Sooooo Is there anything else I can do to keep my furends from furgetting me while I am in Pencil Vane E Ah ???? I really worry about this. One can Never afford to lose a furend, you know.
TVT: Dearest Frankie, you worry too much. You worry about everything from comments to squirrels. I understand because you're such a caring and sensitive dude, but you must relax a bit. Chill. All the aliens want is to enjoy your blog too. Welcome the invasion for now and when you get back, exterminate them. That simple. Go have fun and don't think for a minute that your friends will forget you. You're quite memorable.
Case in point
hero asked...
You're the wise one, Twinkie... and you have a funny bone in you too :)... I love your advice.

Q: How do I convince my hoomans that I don't need to bathe once a week, only when necessary, say if I fall into cat poop sewage.

Licks, hero
TVT: I know, I know, Hero. I'm painfully aware of your bathing issue. I must say I empathize. I suggest you give my dog training tips a shot. Convince your bipeds that baths must all be accompanied by your favorite edibles. After they've mastered this skill, start rolling in cat poop regularly. In the least, you'll be getting more baths and more treats this way. Have fun rolling!
I'd first remove my tie though
Brilliant Q&A session as always. Now that I think about it, I do have one question: what is this burning sensation Nigel is always complaining about after he visits those unscrupulous Poodles at the dog park? ;)
TVT: That's an easy one. Nigel is painfully aware of poor Sola's botched spay job . . . that you've got hanging over his head. Nigel's condition is obviously psychosomatic because you've put the fear of Dog in him.
Relax, Nigel
Frankie asked…
Hey, Twink. You announced the other day that I was fully potty trained. Guess again. Mommy found my secret bathrooms yesterday. Does this mean I'm not fully potty trained yet?
TVT: You bratwurst! Is that why we can't breathe in our home lately? I'm going to share my small dog potty training tips with mommy. You obviously need to be restricted at this point. It would also help if you'd start eating like a dog instead of an Orik vacuum cleaner. Tsk tsp… Canine Good Citizen my-ami! Excuse my language.
Guilty chiweenie
Mango asked…
Dear Miss Twinkie,
I had a date with Miss Tula this week, but halfway through the date this smokin hot burned yeast mountain dog showed up and I sang her my Mango love song. Tula was quite chuffed and used HBO words with me. What did I do wrong?

Slobbers,
Mango
TVT: Yikes, we all know that the Mango can be weak at times, but singing to another lady was rather rude--even for you. Besides, you left out the parts where you had your back turned on her. I highly recommend you turn to Frankie Flirter for advice on dating. This is just an advice column, not a rehab center. Next time you two meet, if she agrees to that, I would focus my attentions on Tula (and only Tula). I would book the entire room just of the two of you. This way you will make her feel special and you won't be tempted. Keep us posted.
Things to avoid in the future

Now go take on the day!

Dog Diarrhea | A Common Occurrence

Your beloved dog has diarrhea. He has the runs and you're running too, to take him outside, to mop up... When do you need to run to the dog vet?

Causes of Dog Diarrhea
First off, diarrhea is not a disease, it's a symptom. It can be something as simple as the result of something your canine has eaten or a change in his diet that you incorporated too quickly, not giving him a chance to adjust. Use your judgment. If your dog has had all his shots, been dewormed, and is not suffering, don't panic. Watch closely while providing and encouraging the consumption of water. Hydration is the key for the majority of dog diarrhea cases.
Other potential causes:
Worms
Roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, and tapeworm can all cause dog diarrhea, if your dog is not dewormed regularly.
Viral Infections
Parvovirus (highly contagious and often fatal if not diagnosed early). Symptoms include vomiting and dark or bloody feces, and your dog will most likely act very ill and lethargic.
Distemper
Canine distemper is another highly contagious viral disease that can be fatal.
Bacterial Infections
Such as E. Coli and Salmonella varieties are often accompanied by bloody dog diarrhea and can cause severe abdominal pain.
Parasites
Coccidiosis.
Blood and mucous in the dog diarrhea is a common symptom. The vet will likely prescribe antibiotics
Giardia
The diarrhea is usually greenish/yellowish and surrounded by mucus. Your dog will start losing weight fast and will also be suffering from abdominal pain and vomiting
Cryptosporidia
A single cell parasite that can cause dog diarrhea

Symptoms of Dog Diarrhea
Bloody Stool
Aside from common diarrhea symptoms, the presence of blood in your canine's stool is not always cause for alarm. It could be simply due to excessive straining. Do not panic. Assess the situation. Is your dog an adult up to date with his shots? If yes, take a moment and check out his demeanor. If he's vibrant and alert, watch him closely and hopefully after a couple of days of home treatment and a bland diet he'll be just fine. If your dog is still a puppy and/or not up to date with his shots, you should probably hurry to your vet's (and ideally bring with you a fecal sample).

Acute vs. Chronic dog diarrhea
Acute diarrhea in dogs is a relatively mild condition that may last up to a couple of weeks and your dog must be carefully monitored. Most cases of acute dog diarrhea are caused by ingested bacteria.
Chronic dog diarrhea persists for over two weeks, is more severe than acute dog diarrhea, and you must pay a visit to your doctor. Chronic diarrhea may be caused by dog food allergies or pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel diseases, parasites in the intestines, bacterial infections and even fungi and protozoans. The stool is often coated with mucus and blood and sometimes this type of diarrhea can end only to recur in a day or two. Watch for dehydration (always first thing to check), weight loss, your dog's coat for roughness, and overall listlessness. Chronic dog diarrhea should not be treated without professional help. Even in cases of food allergies, you will be given a list of hypoallergenic dog food. Your dog needs to be put on a special bland diet and oftentimes mineral, nutrient, and vitamin supplementation is necessary to replenish what is being discarded by the constant bowel movements. In most cases your vet is going to prescribe antibiotics coupled with corticosteroids to assist in the recovery. You need the help of an expert.

When to take your dog to the dog vet
When he's acting very sick or lethargic, if his abdomen shows bloating, if there is fever present (rectal temperature about 103.5F), when there is persistent vomiting, and if there are large amounts of blood in the stool. If you have a puppy, it's better to be safe and go for a stool check and blood work.

What the dog vet can do for your pooch
Fecal testing
Bring with you a stool sample in a sterile container, so the vet can check for parasites, roundworms, coccidia, and Giardia. Fecal cultures can indicate the presence of bacteria, such as salmonella.
Blood work
Those provide you with indications as to whether the major organs, such as the kidney and liver are functioning properly. It also helps rule out infection as a cause for the diarrhea.
Parvo test
For puppies not yet immunized, the parvovirus antigen test must be run. Results are available within minutes because the situation is grave. If your puppy is suffering from parvo, aggressive treatment is warranted as soon as possible
X-Rays
Those help your vet figure out if the diarrhea may be caused by intestinal obstructions or even a foreign object your dog "accidentally" swallowed.

Isolate your dog at first until you are certain he's not contagious.
Provide and encourage the consumption of water, and even use electrolytes ( some unflavored Pedialyte) to ensure better absorption. Lectade Liquid Concentrate is another choice. It is an oral re-hydration therapy for cats and dogs that replenishes the loss of electrolytes accompanying the diarrhea. This is of utmost importance especially if you own a small dog. Small dogs, like teacup chihuahuas, dehydrate really quickly and need to be rushed for IV fluids if they reach that point. Check for sticky pale gums around the clock.
Diet: You may withhold food for up to 24 hours in a mature dog, no more than 12 for a puppy or a small breed. Then start your canine on a bland diet of rice and meat. You can give him either half rice and half boiled chicken, or half rice and half boiled hamburger for a couple of days. Warning, if within a couple of days there is not improvement, head to your dog vet.
There are also a couple of over the counter human medications that help treat dog diarrhea and even vomiting. These include Pepto-Bismol, Imodium, and Kaopectate.
Consult your vet if your dog has diarrhea for more than two days, seems lethargic and low on energy, or had large amounts of blood in his stool.
An odd yet effective home remedy is canned pureed pumpkin (the natural kind with no additives). This is a well kept secret that given to a dog with diarrhea it firms up its stool while given to a dog suffering from constipation it loosens the stool. Give a couple of small teaspoons a day to a small dog and a couple of large tablespoons to a larger breed.

In most cases, dog diarrhea is nothing more than an annoyance. If you have any doubts though, trust your instincts and head to your dog's vet. Just remember, if your dog whines during a bout with diarrhea, make sure you get him out as soon as possible, this way your dog can get immediate relief and you don't have to clean up after him.

Chihuahua And Chiweenie Locked Up

I had the most upsetting day. I spent most of it locked up in Mommy's room with the chiweenie - bratwurst and three (!) cats! Whatever happened to my dignity? Why would Mommy punish me so? She blamed it on Deputy Dog (aka The Walrus, that's what I call this mastiff). Not only was I stuck in the room for several hours, I had to listen to Frankie screaming her head off.
The Walrus
After the Walrus's departure, I expected Mommy to make it up to us. Instead, she took off with Linguini, the dalmatian and german shorthaired pointer mix. She told me I'd be safer at home because I was a small dog. When she got back, I was going to have a chat with her, but she looked so sad, I didn't have the heart to. She had gone deeper into the Angeles Crest National Forrest and she had seen more of the Station Fire aftermath. Linguini looked more grey rather than black and white from the soot.
Angeles Crest National Forrest, Dec. 29, 2009

Later yet, when I was completely convinced Mommy was going to make it up to Frankie and me, she took off with Frankie! It's Tuesday, dog obedience training day. Again, I was left behind. Mommy came home glowing with pride. Apparently lil' chiweenie had aced her dog obedience training class, again.
And the best dog obedience training student award goes to ... Frankie!
I even got dog treats!

Ugh. "What about me?" I wanted to scream as Mommy pulled me aside and gave me a special sweet potato treat. Did she really think I could be bribed so easily? Aha! Affirmative. 'Cause I love my Momma, she's the best and tomorrow I bet she'll make it up to me.
I'm feeling pretty confident she will.

Our Small Dog Rescue Barn

Ever since I got healthy, Mom started taking me out to the barn. I know I am a small dog, but I can run like the best of them!

                                                                                                                                               THE BARN

Our barn is special, in the sense that all horse riders can bring their dogs. Large, medium sized, tiny...they're all welcome; small dogs and large. I was welcomed too. The people already knew about me, so when I finally made my debut, they knew my name and they all took turns watching me and keeping this small dog warm by sticking me inside their sweaters. The other rescue dogs wanted to befriend me. Yay!

  My Barn Friends
To a visitor, our barn looks as if we're running a small dog rescue

At first, a day at the barn, running around with my new friends, meant a relapse and I'd stay in bed for a day or two. I was too tired to even eat. Mom would get really worried and contemplate not taking me again. "Please, please don't do that," I wanted to scream, but I didn't have to. She thought it over carefully and decided that this small dog should be exposed to whatever healthy dogs are exposed to, only, since I was so sickly and tine, in small increments.

By now, we can go to the barn and spend hours there. When I get tired, I just go up to my mom, turn my tail towards her, and wait. She always picks me up. I take a break to play with my small dog toys and then I'm off again. There's too much to do and see . Horses and small dogs everywhere, and nice animal lovers among them. It's heaven for me...and Frankie, and Daisy (my sisters).

Today, we were naughty. All three of us, disobeyed our mother and started goofing around in a coral. Now, I get it, she doesn't want us small dogs to get kicked by a horse, but we were safe. The coral was empty, what was she yelling to us for? I guess she loves us too much and too much love is a good thing. Twink!

I don't get to go riding often, but today was one of those rare days. I love to ride. I ride English, no stirrups, and sometimes bareback too. I may be a small dog but I'm skilled. I just wish they made a helmet small enough for me. I think that riding without a helmet is silly and irresponsible. I just don't have a choice. I've visited several online small dog boutiques and no helmet.

    Getting Ready to Ride Theodore

I'm so tired now. I need a nap. I'll probably sleep until tomorrow morning.
